Course-Minisymposium, Lima
Emerging Infectious Diseases: Environmental Factors and Lessons from COVID-19
November 25th, 2022 - November 27th, 2022
This minisymposium is addressed to researchers, physicians and graduate students interested in further their understanding of emerging pathogens, including their origins and consequences for human health. Attending graduate students may use their participation to claim academic credits towards their degrees.
The roster of speakers to this meeting include internationally recognized experts, from Peru, Spain and elsewhere, who will discuss theoretical and practical issues relevant to emerging diseases. The approaches will range from mechanisms and examples of zoonotic spillovers to environmental impacts on the emergence of new human diseases, notably infectious diseases, to genetic factors associated with severe COVID-19, molecular and physiological mechanisms of adaptation to residence at high altitude or new vaccines and new drug design strategies.
This meeting will take place in a hybrid format, that is, both in-site and on-line. All presentations and discussions are scheduled in morning sessions, Peru time, compatible with afternoon sessions in Spain, the two countries where meeting participants are expected to be more numerous.
In order to participate in one or the other modality, an online registration is required on this website.
Duration: 3 days – morning (Peru)/afternoon-evening (Spain, +6 h)
Format: hybrid (in-person + virtual – Zoom)
Language: Spanish(*)(
In-person venue: UPCH Miraflores Campus, Av. Armendáriz 497, Miraflores 15074, Lima, Peru.
*Two presentations will be delivered in English, for which simultaneous translation to Spanish will be provided to all participants

Context
LIINCGLOBAL is an initiative by the Spanish National Science Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, CSIC) to promote the training and enhanced capabilities of Latin American researchers and to encourage the creation and reinforcement of scientific networks between Spanish and Latin American scientists and research teams. More specifically, the aim of LINCGLOBAL 2022 is to organize meetings, dialogues and symposia in 2022, 2023 and 2024, focused on the molecular determinants of environmental factors on the pathophysiology and development of severe disease in humans, in a bilateral collaboration between CSIC and the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) in Lima.
Although our interests, as the organizing committee, on environmental factors as disease determinants are broad and diverse, we will place particular emphasis on the effects of hypobaric hypoxia resulting from residence at high altitude (≥ 2,500 m above sea level). From a global perspective, Peru’s unique geographical and anthropological characteristics make it an exceptional region to study the molecular effects and consequent disease modulation of high-altitude hypoxia on human populations, as well as on any other living being. Our stance and working hypothesis is that a detailed study of transcriptional, epigenetic, immune, metabolic and physiological reprogramming resulting from chronic exposure to hypobaric hypoxia will afford a better understanding of key pathogenic mechanisms underlying the prevalence and severity of many human disease, including autoimmune, neoplastic or infectious. That said, we also give significant consideration to non-molecular or non-biological factors associated with human diseases, in a holistic approach.
In this first edition of LINCGLOBAL 2022, given the historically exceptional circumstances associated to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we have deemed it appropriate to devote time and space to relevant considerations on the lessons learnt from the current pandemic, and whether they are preparing us better to face future pandemics. For the 2023 and 2024 editions, we intend to switch to a more focused attention to hypoxia, both “macroenvironmental” and “microenvironmental”, as a molecular remodeler of human physiology and disease.
Talks will have the following features
- Hybrid format: in-person (for participants in Lima, Peru)/online
- Introduced by a moderator
- Level: graduate students, researchers, physicians
- Approximate duration: 30 minutes
- Questions and answers: 5-10 minutes per talk
- Recorded for future distribution
